Opt outdoors for your mental health

After the year we’ve had, we can all agree that getting outdoors has been critical for keeping on top of our mental health. Whether it’s to escape from the same four walls, take a break from family or housemates (because we definitely didn’t sign up for 24-hour confinement with them!) or because you’re fed up with your fitness watch telling you you’re not moving enough. Whatever the reason, we all know a good walk does wonders for our health – not just physically but mentally too.

Mental Health Awareness Week (10-16 May) encourages us to make the most of the nature around us. Research by the Mental Health Foundation shows that during the pandemic going for walks was one of our top coping mechanisms and 45% of Brits reported that being in green spaces was vital for their mental health.

The pandemic hasn’t been easy on any of us – it’s so important to put your mental health first and give yourself a break. As things slowly return to normal, it’s completely understandable to be anxious about meeting up with people, eating out again or heading back to the office. So, we thought we’d share our favourite walks in and around Manchester to give you inspiration for your daily dose of fresh air. It’s also National Walking Month – another great excuse to get outside!

River Irwell and Peel Park Route (4 miles)

You may think you’ve exhausted every possible walk around Manchester city centre during lockdown, but have you tried this loop walk? Starting at Blackfriars, this route will see you through The Meadow, Peel Park and the David Lewis Sports Ground with the River Irwell in sight all the way.

Manchester Wharf City Trail (2.5 miles)

See the sights on this circular route. Starting off at The Wharf, work your way along Rochdale Canal towpath before turning left towards Manchester Art Gallery and the Town Hall. Living or working in the city, it’s easy to forget how incredible the architecture is – this walk gives you a tour of some of Manchester’s most stunning buildings.

Victoria Mill Park and Canal Walk (1.8 miles)

Starting at Victoria Mill Park, make your way down the canal towards New Islington. Here you’ll be invited by a hidden oasis. New Islington Marina is not only a lovely escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, but it’s also home to the infamous Pollen Bakery. If you’re looking for a slightly longer route, head back to Victoria Mill via Pollard Yard where you’ll find lots of small, indie businesses, including bakeries, eateries and salons.

Angel Meadow

This is not necessarily a place to go for a walk, but if you’re over by Victoria Station, it’s a lovely green space and the perfect spot to sit and have some lunch in the sunshine.

Fancy getting out of the city?

Fletcher Moss is a botanical garden in Didsbury – just jump on the tram from the city centre and get off at Didsbury Village and it’s a short walk from there.

If you’re looking for more than a lunchtime stroll, why not head out to the Pennines or even the Peak District? Here are a few of our favourite spots further afield:

– Saddleworth
– Pennington Flash
– Winter Hill
– Dovestone Reservoir

We hope we’ve inspired you to get out and explore the hidden beauty spots around us. Remember to use the campaign hashtags #ConnectWithNature and #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek to share what it means to you. Tag us @arbetamcr in your Manchester nature photos – we’d love to see them!
