Take a flight through Arbeta…and find out how we did it!

Experience Arbeta from a truly unique perspective with our incredible fly through film:

We’re sure you will agree it’s an amazing film, perfectly showcasing Arbeta and its great amenities including the full height atrium, the café bar, the large floor plates and our Plug and Play spaces in a very different way.

We’re all about collaboration at Arbeta and we were thrilled to work with Defy Studios who are based at our sister site The Sharp Project on the film. We caught up with director David Ross to find out how they did it.

What kind of drone did you use?

We use a First Person View (FPV) drone that puts our pilots virtually in the cockpit, they see a real-time feed through a headset as they remotely fly it. This type of drone can fly from outside to inside, get close to or fly through obstacles to make a shot more dramatic and create long takes. The drone is completely manual, it’s the same sort of tech that’s used in drone racing. We use a gyroscope to record the flight and use that data in post-production to produce a perfectly smooth stabilised shot.

How long did it take to shoot?

We had a day of planning and a day for the shoot itself. We initially visited the building and discussed what would be visually the most impressive route to showcase Arbeta. We filmed the route from the ground and then created a flight plan back in our office at The Sharp Project.

On the day of the shoot we did around five test flights to make sure we were happy with the route and fine-tuned the speed and timings.

The large atrium in Arbeta is flooded with natural light and Manchester being Manchester provided us with in out cloud all day so it made the timings tricky. We ended up doing about 20 takes to get the best light. The take used in the film is actually the last shot we did!

Was it really done in just one take?

Absolutely! There’s no transitions or trickery, every twist and turn you see is real. The only thing we did to make it more engaging was to add time remapping because the original take was over three minutes, so we ramped up the speed throughout the video to get to the more exiting parts quicker.

As well as showcasing properties like Arbeta, what else do you use drone filming for?

Our drones can be used for lots of other applications such as TV, online, adverts, promos, film, events and live streaming, just to name a few!

We use the FPV drone mostly for real estate, events and sport. You can see more examples of our work on our site: https://www.defy-studios.com/
